Recovery Time by Treatment
Recovery is the thing that decides whether a treatment fits your trip. It has two parts that people mix up: how long you look treated, and how long until the result is actually there.

Two different clocks
Downtime is how long a treatment is visible to other people — redness, swelling, injection marks, flaking.
Result time is how long until the treatment has done what it was meant to do. Botulinum toxin settles in around two weeks and fillers in about a month. Skin boosters and collagen-based lifting take one to three months.
A trip has to fit the first one. The second one usually happens after you are home, and that is normal rather than a problem.
Typical downtime by category
| Treatment | Visible for | Result settles | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Botulinum toxin | About a day (small raised points) | 10–14 days | Stay upright for about four hours afterwards |
| Fillers | Mild swelling or fullness for 2–3 weeks; bruising 1–2 weeks, occasionally up to 3 | About a month | Lips swell most |
| Skin boosters | Injection points for a day; 2–3 days for polynucleotide types such as Rejuran | 4+ weeks, over a course | Bruising is possible |
| Focused ultrasound lifting | Hours of pinkness, occasional tenderness | 2–3 months | The most trip-friendly of the lifting treatments |
| Thermage and ONDA | Slight pinkness at most | 2–3 months | Normal activity the same day |
| Microneedling radiofrequency | 3–5 days of pinpoint redness and mild swelling | 4–8 weeks after the course | Planned as a course |
| Thread lifting | About a week, sometimes longer | 2–3 months | The least trip-friendly on this list |
| Laser toning | A few hours of redness | Over a course | Sun protection matters throughout |
| Spot pigment removal | 5–10 days of darkened spots and small crusts | Once the crusts have fallen | Darkening of spots is expected, not a problem |
| Fractional and resurfacing lasers | 1–2 weeks of redness, dryness and peeling, occasionally up to 3 | Weeks to months | Plan around sun exposure |
| Clinic facials and light peels | A few hours | Days | Stronger peels flake for several days |
These are typical ranges, not promises. Skin type, how much is done, and individual healing all move them.
What makes recovery longer than expected
- Doing more in one session. Two areas of filler swell more than one; a full-face laser reacts more than a small patch.
- Heat. Sauna, hot showers, intense exercise and alcohol all increase swelling and redness in the first day or two.
- Sun. After any laser or peel, sun exposure is the most avoidable cause of pigmentation that was not there before.
- Flights. Cabin pressure and hours of sitting still make swelling more obvious. That is the reason for a buffer before flying.
How this shapes a short trip
Days are counted from the first day you can visit a clinic to the day you fly home, so a two-day window means one treatment day and the flight day.
| Days available | Realistic choices |
|---|---|
| 1 day | Hydrating facial or light peel |
| 2 days | The above plus focused ultrasound, Thermage or ONDA, laser toning, botulinum toxin if you accept that the result lands after you leave |
| 3 days | The above plus skin boosters or spot pigment removal |
| 4–5 days | The above plus fillers or microneedling radiofrequency |
| 6–7 days | Fractional laser becomes possible, and the first session of any course |
| 8+ days | Thread lifting becomes possible |
Two sessions of a booster or laser course need at least two weeks between them plus the buffer, which means a stay of about two and a half weeks. A review at around two weeks after toxin needs about fifteen days if you treat on the first day; the one-month check after fillers usually falls after a short trip.
The trip planner does this calculation with the dates you actually have, including the buffer each treatment needs before a flight.
What to ask at the consultation
- How will this look tomorrow, in three days, and in two weeks?
- Is bruising likely for what I am having, and where would it show?
- What is the earliest I could fly without making recovery harder?
- If something looks uneven, when should it be reviewed — and can that happen before I leave?
The fourth question matters most on a short trip, because a review two weeks later is only possible if you are still in the country or can be seen remotely.
Plan it with the trip planner
Enter your dates and what you are considering, and the planner shows the last day each treatment can reasonably be done before your flight. It uses the ranges on this page, so treat the output as a starting point for the conversation with a clinic — not as a decision.
FAQ
Can I cover redness with makeup?
Usually yes after injectables, once the injection points have closed — typically from the next day, and the clinic will confirm. After lasers and peels, clinics generally ask you to wait longer, because makeup on a compromised barrier is a route to irritation. Ask for a specific answer before you leave the clinic.
Which treatments leave nothing visible?
Focused ultrasound and most hydrating facials leave little more than brief pinkness. That is why they are the usual choice when someone has only a day or two.
Why does swelling look worse the next day?
Tissue reacts over several hours, so the peak is usually 24 to 48 hours after treatment rather than immediately. This is why judging a filler result on the day is misleading.
Does bruising change the plan?
It can. Bruising is unpredictable even in experienced hands, so if you have a fixed event, leave a margin rather than assuming the best case.
