Planning a clinic visit in Myeongdong, Seoul

Getting to Myeongdong from the airport

Almost every route into Myeongdong passes through Seoul Station, which is two stops away on Line 4. Getting to Seoul Station is the part that differs by airport, and the part worth deciding before you land rather than in the arrivals hall.

From Incheon (ICN) to Myeongdong

The airport railway runs from both terminals to Seoul Station, which is the transfer point for Myeongdong. There are two services on the same line: an all-stop train, and an express that reserves seats and makes fewer stops. The all-stop train is the one most visitors use — it leaves more often, and the difference in journey time is modest.

At Seoul Station, transfer to Line 4 and ride two stops: Hoehyeon, then Myeongdong. The transfer is inside the station complex, so you do not go out to the street with your luggage.

Buses also run from the airport into the city and stop near the larger hotels. Routes and stops change, so check the current ones at the airport counter rather than relying on a page like this.

From Gimpo (GMP) to Myeongdong

Gimpo is much closer to the centre, and you have a choice of lines. The airport railway again reaches Seoul Station for the Line 4 transfer. Line 9 and Line 5 also serve Gimpo, so if your route happens to suit one of those, take it — one line with no transfer usually beats a shorter ride with one.

When to take a taxi instead

Three cases, all of them about the luggage rather than the time.

  • Late arrival. Trains stop running earlier than you might expect.
  • Stairs. Not every station entrance in the district has a lift, and the narrow lanes are hard work with a suitcase at a busy hour.
  • A group. Two or more people with cases usually comes out sensibly for a single taxi.

A reasonable compromise is the train as far as Seoul Station and a taxi for the last leg. That last stretch is short, and it puts you at the building entrance rather than at a station exit.

What to have written down before you land

Take the building name and the floor, not just the district. Clinics in Myeongdong are on the upper floors of mixed-use towers, and the district’s street-level signage is retail rather than medical.

It is also worth having the clinic’s address in Korean on your phone, to show a taxi driver. Finding a clinic in a Myeongdong building covers what to look for once you are at the door, and the clinic phrasebook has the lines you may need on the way.

Do not plan the appointment for landing day

It is tempting, particularly on a short trip. The reason not to is not the journey but everything around it: immigration queues vary, luggage takes as long as it takes, and a consultation goes better when you are not counting the minutes. If the trip is genuinely tight, the trip planner will show what still fits.

FAQ

What is the simplest route from Incheon to Myeongdong?

The airport railway to Seoul Station, then two stops on Line 4. It is one transfer, it runs on a fixed timetable regardless of traffic, and the transfer at Seoul Station is inside the station rather than out on the street.

Is a taxi worth it from the airport?

It is worth considering if you land late, if you are travelling with someone who cannot manage stairs, or if you have more luggage than you can carry up a flight. Otherwise the train is more predictable, because the road journey from Incheon varies a great deal with traffic.

How long should I allow?

From Incheon, allow about two hours from landing to standing in Myeongdong once immigration, baggage and the transfer are counted. From Gimpo it is closer to an hour. Do not schedule an appointment for the same morning you land.

Which station exit do I want?

Ask the clinic for the exit number rather than guessing. Myeongdong station has exits spread across several blocks, and coming up at the wrong one can leave you on the far side of a wide road. For dermia clinic, coming from Seoul Station on Line 4, it is Hoehyeon exit 7 (about seven minutes on foot) or Myeongdong exit 5 (about eight).

Does my phone work for directions here?

Korean map apps are noticeably better than the alternatives for walking directions in Seoul. Install one before you arrive, because searching for a clinic in English on the wrong app is the usual reason people end up at the right building on the wrong block.
