Myeongdong, Seoul
Myeongdong is a compact district in central Seoul, on the north side of the Han River. It holds one of the densest concentrations of dermatology clinics in the country, and for a visitor that density is the point: a consultation, a treatment and a follow-up can all happen within a few blocks of each other.
Why the clinics are in Myeongdong
Three things put them in these streets rather than elsewhere. The district sits at the meeting point of several subway lines, so patients arrive from anywhere in the city without a difficult journey. It has been the first stop for overseas visitors to Seoul for decades, which means clinics here deal with patients who do not read Korean as a matter of routine rather than as an exception. And the buildings are mixed-use towers with retail at street level and consulting floors above, which is the shape a clinic needs.
The result is that Myeongdong behaves less like a neighbourhood that happens to contain clinics and more like a medical quarter with shopping around it. That is worth knowing before you arrive, because it changes what you should ask for: a building name and a floor, not a street.
How Myeongdong is laid out
Wide avenues form the edges and narrow pedestrian lanes fill the middle. The core is flat, which matters more than it sounds on a day when you would rather not walk uphill. The ground rises towards the south, in the direction of Namsan, and the northern boundary runs along Euljiro.
Nothing in the middle is far from anything else. Walking across the core takes ten to fifteen minutes, and inside the district that is almost always quicker than going back down into a station.
What does not change here
This section deliberately covers only the parts of Myeongdong that stay put: the subway lines and station exits, the shape of the district, the way buildings are signed and numbered, and how it compares with the other clinic districts in Seoul. Opening hours, prices, hotels and which shops are where all change, so you will not find them on this site — check those close to your trip.
